Your battery is not on the inverter’s protocol list

Every hybrid inverter ships with a protocol menu listing brands the manufacturer tested. Your battery is often not among them, and the menu gives no clue which entry, if any, will work.

Battery makers license or clone BMS protocol implementations rather than inventing new ones. A large share of rack batteries speak a dialect of Pylontech, because Pylontech got there early and everybody built against it. That is why a menu entry named for a brand you did not buy sometimes works perfectly.

Test it, do not assume it

Pick the protocol your battery vendor names in its manual, even when the name belongs to a different company. If the manual names nothing, Pylontech is the usual first attempt on rack batteries.

Then watch three things over a full cycle. Reported state of charge should move smoothly rather than jumping with load. Charge should taper near the top instead of stopping abruptly. And the inverter should show cell level data if the battery publishes it. Two out of three means the link is partial, which is worse than open loop because it looks like it works.

Partial links are the real hazard

A protocol mismatch rarely fails loudly. It fails by passing some messages and dropping others, so the inverter reads state of charge correctly and never receives the charge current limit. Everything looks healthy until the day the BMS needs to ask for less current and has no way to say so.

If you cannot verify all three behaviours, run the system open loop with hand set voltage limits and a shunt monitor. That configuration is predictable. A half working comms link is not.

What settles it

One document, from either manufacturer, naming the other unit by model. Nothing else counts. Not a forum reply, not a retailer product page, not a video of somebody’s screen. Protocol implementations get revised, and the pairing that worked in 2023 is not evidence about the firmware on your shelf.
